Wet Coconut Chutney is the unavoidable part of South Indian dishes like Idli/Dosa/Vada. Wet coconut chutney is a blended mixture of coconut, coriander leaves, garlic, ginger, curry leaves and green chillies. There can be many variations of coconut chutney like adding different ingredients in the main ingredient i.e. coconut.

Wet Coconut Chutney is an extremely easy and tasty recipe. You can complement this chutney with any south Indian dish as well as any parathas. Nutritional values of this chutney makes it healthy and medically beneficial. There are many variations of this chutney.

What are ingredients in coconut chutney?

Wet Masala

  • Coriander Leaves (कोथिंबीर)
  • Garlic (लह्सुन )
  • Ginger (अद्रक)
  • Curry Leaves (कढीपत्ता)
  • Green Chilies (हिरवी मिरची / हरी मिरची)
  • Coconut (ओले नारळ)

Dry Masala

  • Cumin Seed (जीरे)
  • Urad Dal(उरद दाल)
  • Turmeric powder (हळद)
  • Salt (मीठ)
  • Sugar (साखर)
  • Edible oil
  • Water

How to prepare coconut chutney?

step 1

Take 1 cup grated coconut into the mixture pot.

Add 4-5 cut green chillies into it.

step 3

Add 1 inch ginger, cut into pieces into it.

step 4

Add 3-4 cut garlic cloves into it.

step 5

Add ½ cup coriander leaves into it.

step 6

Add 5-6 curry leaves.

Blend it.

Add 1 cup water.

Add 1 teaspoon salt.

Add1 teaspoon sugar.

Blend it. Check the consistency. If you want more liquid then add ½ cup of water and blend it again.

Take this mixture in the bowl.

For Tadka , take a tadka pan, switch on the gas and add 2 teaspoon of oil in it.

When oil gets heated, add 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds in it.

Then add 1 teaspoon urad dal in it.

Add, ½ spoon of turmeric powder, 4-5 curry leaves in the tadka pan.

Pour this tadka on the blended coconut chutney.

Ready to serve.

Special Note

  • If you want sour taste, you can add lemon or curd in this chutney.
  • Use fresh coconut for more juicy and flavoured chutney.
  • Consistency of this chutney can be adjusted by adding water of our choice.

Variations of this chutney

The main ingredient of coconut chutney is coconut. We can mix different ingredients to change the taste of the regular chutney.
  • We can add soaked chana dal in the coconut chutney. It thickens the chutney
  • If you are a spice lover, you can increase the quantity and type of green chillies.
  • We can add lemon in this chutney for sour taste. But serving with Idli/Dosa I did not prefer lemon as  Idli/Dosa batter is already sour one

  • Wet coconut chutney goes well with Idli/Dosa/Uttapam/Appe/Medu Vada
  • This chutney can be served with your regular meal.
  • We can serve coconut chutney with snacks like Pakora/Upma/Poha
  • Regular parathas can taste better with this chutney.

How to preserve?

This is wet chutney. So, store it in a plastic container and store it in the refrigerator. It can be stored for 2-3 days in the refrigerator. We can store it in the deep freeze for a month.

My experience with this chutney

South Indian dishes taste superb with coconut chutney which can be made in different styles. I always prepare wet coconut chutney with south Indian dishes. Idli and Dosa cooked at home are incomplete with wet coconut chutney.

Everyone at home loves this chutney and can't imagine dosa or idli without it. I even make this chutney with stuffed parathas. My efforts are always to make this chutney due  to its nutritional values.
