Onion chutney - Vengaya chutney is best accompanied with idli, dosa, upma or appams. As onions are known as vengaya in Tamil language. It is very common and famous in all south Indian homes. It is a perfect mixture of onions, chana dal, dry red chillies which are fried in oil and blended well with tamarind and jaggery makes it spicy and tangy.

This delicious Onion chutney is made up with basic ingredients onions, chana dal, red chillies, tamarind and jaggery and is made in less than 10 minutes. It tastes well with idli, dosa, upma or appams.

Ingredients

Wet Masala

  • Onion (कांदा /प्याज) 
  • Curry Leaves (कढीपत्ता)

Dry Masala

  • Mustard Seeds (मोहरी)
  • Cumin Seed (जीरे)
  • Dry Red Chilies
  • Tamarind(चिंच)
  • Urad Dal(उरद दाल)
  • Chana Dal(चना दाल)
  • Asafoetida (हिंग)
  • Salt (मीठ)
  • Jaggery(गुड़)
  • Edible oil

How to make chutney?

Take 2 medium size Onions and chopped them finely

Heat the pan

Add 2 spoon Oil and let it heat

step 4

When oil is heated add 1 teaspoon Cumin seeds

Put 3-4 dry Red Chillies and stir it

step 6

Add 2 teaspoon roasted Chana Dal

step 7

Stir it for 2 minutes

Then add chopped Onion and stir it continuously till onion becomes golden brown

Add 1 teaspoon Tamarind

step 10

Add 1 teaspoon Salt

Put 1 teaspoon Jaggery

Blend it to smooth

Take it out in bowl

Take tadka pan

Add 1 teaspoon Oil and heat it

Add 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds, 1 teaspoon Urad dal, pinch of hing, 1 dry Red Chilli, 4-5 Curry Leaves.

Pour this tadka on blended chutney

Special Note 

  • You can use pearl onions instead of big onions.
  • Saute onion to avoid its raw smell 
  • If dry red chillies are not available then use 1 teaspoon red chilli powder
  • If you use sesame oil for frying onions then it will give good flavor

By keeping this chutney as base, we can add different ingredients/vegetables in this chutney. Like you can add tomato/carrot/spinach/mint/coriander leaves and many more your favorite vegetables to give a twist to this chutney.

How to preserve Onion Chutney?

This is wet chutney. Its shelf life is 1-2 days and it has to be stored in a refrigerator.

My experience with Onion Chutney
