Dry Groundnut Chutney is a famous Chutney in Maharashtra and cooked house to house. Various types of dry or fresh chutneys have always been part of our daily meal since olden days.

Let's look at one of my favorite dry chutneys...

  • 1 cup Groundnuts (Sengdana)
  • 7-8 chopped Garlic (Lehsun)
  • 5-6 Dry Red Chilies (lal Mirch)
  • 2 teaspoon Cumin Seed (Jeera)
  • 10-12 Curry leaves (Karipatta)
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 teaspoon edible oil

How To Make Groundnut Chutney Powder?

Take a pan. Heat it and put Groundnuts in it. Roast nuts in low flame for 5 minutes. Keep it stirring occasionally.  Take it out on a plate and put it aside.

Put oil on the pan. Once oil gets hot, add Cumin Seed (Jeera) in it. Keep it stirring.

When Cumin Seed (Jeera) is roasted , add Red Chilies (lal Mirch) and keep it stirring.

Once the Red Chilies (lal Mirch) color slightly changes , add  Curry leaves (Karipatta) and keep it stirring continuously as Curry leaves (Karipatta) get burnt easily. We have to dry those leaves but they should not get burnt.

Add Garlic (Lehsun) and keep it stirring for 1 minute.

Add roasted Groundnuts and keep it stirring continuously till all nuts get roasted in the oil.

Switched off the gas and let the whole ingredients cooled down.

When it is cooled down, mix 1 teaspoon of Salt in it and grind it.

Mixed it properly and it is ready to eat.

Special Notes

  • Don't remove the skin of Groundnuts as it gives nice color to the Chutney and it's nutritional.
  • Don't grind the mixture too soft. Let it be rough, it tastes nicely.

Variations of Chutney

  • We can use red Groundnut or pink Groundnut as base to this Chutney. Red Groundnut is tastier than pink one.
  • We can use kashmiri lal mirch if you want less spicy chutney. Even we can increase 3-4 mirch to make more spicy
  • We can avoid curry leaves if you dont like its flavour.
  • We can use it for fasting(Upwas) as a taste enhancer but no need to add garlic and curry leaves while preparing it.

How to Serve

  • You can serve this chutney by adding some edible oil in it and eat with Roti/Chapati/Paratha.
  • You can spread it on the steamed rice, pour some edible oil if you want and eat it.
  • It tastes best with Parathas/Thalipeeth.
  • You can serve it with a daily meal which can be used as a taste enhancer due to its vibrant flavour.
  • You can serve this chutney by sprinkling some lesson juice on it.
  • You can serve it with vada pav (which is a famous Maharashtrian snack).
  • Sprinkle this chutney on chopped onion and eat with Roti/Chapati/Paratha. You can add lemon juice or edible oil on it.
  • This chutney is the best option to eat with Roti/Chapati for odd time hunger.
  • Crushed Papad and add some chutney, chopped onion, edible oil/lemon juice and serve with Roti/Chapati. It would be good option to dislike Sabji (vegetables/curry).

How to preserve Groundnut Chutney?

It's dry chutney so we can store it in an air-tight jar and keep it at room-temperature. No need to store it in the refrigerator. It can be easily stored for a month in an air-tight jar.

How to increase the taste of Groundnut Chutney while eating?

  • Add some lemon while eating it in the meal.
  • Add some oil while eating with Roti or Paratha.
  • You can add it in vada pav to increase vada pav test.
  • Add it in a small cut onion and eat that onion with roti or parathas.

Disadvantages of Groundnut Chutney

Anything eaten in moderate proportion is not bad for health. But if we crossed the limit then it can cause health issues. Due to proteins available in groundnuts, some people may face allergies or even some people can have headaches.

Whenever my friends are coming for a meal at home, I make Dry Groundnut Chutney for them as they liked this chutney. Even some friends asked to take it to their home. There are always some chutneys and pickles on my dining table, this chutney is one of them. This chutney is frequently eaten at my home. It is even liked by my kids as well as my husband.
