Pickles are unavoidable from Indian meals. Pickles are part of daily intake, may be with Parathas or Dal-Rice or plane Sabji-Roti. From younger one to older one, Pickles are liked and enjoyed. Even my grandmother was very fond of Raw Mango Pickle, but due to her weak teeth, she was unable to chew Mango Pieces. So, my mother made a Grated Raw Mango Pickle which was very famous in our home between younger one and older one.

So, let's go through the recipe…

  • 2-3 Raw Mangoes (कच्चा आंबा)
  • 1 teaspoon Fennel seeds (बडीशेप)
  • 2 teaspoon Fenugreek seeds  (मेथीचे दाणे)
  • 2 teaspoon Mustard Seeds (मोहरी)
  • 2 teaspoon Cumin Seed (जिरे)
  • 2 teaspoon  Turmeric powder (हळद)
  • 3 teaspoon Coriander powder (धणे पावडर)
  • 3 teaspoon Red Chilli powder (मिरची पावडर)
  • ½ teaspoon Asafoetida (हिंग)
  • ½ cup Salt (मीठ)
  • 3 teaspoon Sugar
  • 1 cup edible oil

How to make?

Washed Mangoes and dried it with clothes.

Peeled the Mangoes

Then Grate the Mangoes.

Add 2 teaspoon Turmeric powder and 4 teaspoon Salt in the grated Mangoes and mix in properly.

Take a pan. Heat it. Add Fennel seeds and stir it continuously. When Fennel seeds change their color, take it out  from the pan and let it cool.

Now add Fenugreek seeds in the pan and heat it. Stir it continuously. When Fenugreek seeds change their color, take it out from the pan and let it cool.

Now add Cumin seeds in the pan and heat it. Stir it continuously. When Cumin seeds change their color, take it out from the pan and let it cool.

Take Fennel seeds, Fenugreek seeds and Cumin seeds in a mixture pot and blend it. Let it blend to a smooth mixture. Keep it aside.

Take Mustard seeds and blend it so that its black cover will remove from the seed.You can remove those covers or keep it as it is. I always keep it as it is.

Now all ingredients are ready with us and time to cook.

Take a pan and heat it. Add  1 cup oil in it. When oil is heated, add Asafoetida. Then add Mustard seeds mixture in it. Stir it continuously for 1 minute and then add  Fennel seeds, Fenugreek seeds and Cumin seeds mixture. Stir it continuously. Add Red chili powder and Coriander powder in it. Stir it continuously for 1 minute. Take it out from the gas and let it cool down.

Add this mixture into the grated Mangoes and stir it properly.

Add 1 teaspoon Sugar into it.

Store it in a glass or ceramic jar. Stir it for 3-4 days daily once.

Ready to eat.

Special Note

  • You can use yellow color Mustard seeds instead of black.
  • Even in some areas, you get crushed Mustard seeds, which can be used also.
  • You can use jaggery instead of sugar.

How to Serve Grated Raw Mango Pickle?

  • This pickle is made up of grated mangoes so it can be good for older ones as it would be difficult for them to eat pieces of Mangoes due to weak teeth.
  • Pickles are part of our daily meal. It can be eaten on a regular basis with any meal.
  • You can serve this chutney with Roti/Chapati/Paratha.
  • You can eat it with Dal-Rice.
  • It tastes best with Parathas/Thalipeeth.
  • You can serve it with a daily meal which can be used as a taste enhancer due to its tangy flavour.
  • This pickle is the best option to eat with Roti/Chapati for odd time hunger.
  • It would be a good option to dislike Sabji (vegetables/curry).

  • There is lots of salt used in Pickle to preserve it. And lots of salt content food is bad for your health which can result in high blood pressure.
  • Pickles are also preserved in lots of oil, which also have bad effects on the body.

My experience

Summer is the season, when there is ample amount of Raw Mangoes available in the market. This is the time when I make Pickles to preserve for a year. My in-laws do like pickles and wanted it sometimes in lunch/dinner. But regular raw mango pickles are difficult for them to bite. So, I always make this Grated Raw Mango Pickle for them so that they can enjoy the food.

Even my kids like this pickle due to its fibre like structure.
