Flax Seeds Chutney / Jawas Chutney is a traditional Chutney in Maharashtra and cooked house to house. Flax seeds are one of the healthiest foods in the World. It is used to improve digestion, healthy skin and hair, lower cholesterol, reduce sugar cravings, balance hormones, fight cancer and promote weight loss. It is also helpful in menstruation pain.

There are different ways to include Flax Seeds in our meal. One is making its chutney. This chutney is a combination of flax seeds, garlic, red chillies, cumin seeds. All elements involved are beneficial to health. It is easy to make and tasty to eat.

If you like dry and spicy chutneys then you can also try Groundnut or Peanut chutney and Sesame chutney.


  • 1 cup Flax Seeds(Jawas)
  • 5-6 chopped Garlic (Lehsun)
  • 2-3 Dry Red Chilies (Lal Mirch)
  • 2 teaspoon Cumin Seed (Jeera)
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 teaspoon edible oil
  • 5 to 6 curry leaves(Optional)

How to Make?

step 1

Take a pan. Put oil in it. When oil is heated, put chopped Garlic in it. Stir it.

When Garlic changes its color, put Red Chilies in it and stir continuously.

Once, Red chilies color slightly changes, add Cumin seed and stir thoroughly.

After 1 minute add, Flax Seeds and stir continuously till Flax seeds popped up from pan

step 5

Switched off the gas.

step 6

Let the mixture cool down.

When it is cooled down, mix 1 teaspoon of Salt in it and grind it so that the final mixture is smooth in texture.

Mixed it properly and it is ready to eat.

Special Note

  • Roast Flax Seeds on low flame so that it can be cooked and not burnt.
  • You can avoid Garlic in it.

Variations of chutney

  • There are two basic types of flax seeds, brown and golden. The brown seeds have a somewhat stronger flavor than the golden seeds. So,the brown flaxseed will produce a much darker chutney.
  • We can use both brown and golden Flaxseed to make chutney.
  • We can use kashmiri lal mirch if you want less spicy chutney. Even we can increase 3-4 mirch to make it more spicy.

How to Serve Flax Seeds Chutney / Jawas Chutney?

  • You can serve this chutney by adding some edible oil in it and eat with Roti/Chapati/Paratha.
  • You can spread it on the steamed rice, pour some edible oil if you want and eat it.
  • It tastes best with Parathas/Thalipeeth by pouring some edible oil on it.
  • You can serve it with a daily meal which can be used as a taste enhancer due to its vibrant flavour.

How to preserve?

It's dry chutney so we can store it in an air-tight jar and keep it at room-temperature. No need to store it in the refrigerator. It can be easily stored for a month in an air-tight jar.

How to increase the taste of Flax Seeds Chutney / Jawas Chutney while eating?

Add some oil while eating with Roti or Paratha.

My experience with Flax Seeds Chutney

Due to its nutritional values, I try to keep it always on my dining table. Flax Seeds are an alternative to Omega-3 which is found in fish. Being vegan or vegetarian, I try to eat at least 2 teaspoon of Flax Seeds Chutney everyday. Even I insisted my family members eat this chutney daily.
