Chana Dal Chutney or split chickpeas chutney is famous in India. Basically, the main Ingredient in this Chutney Recipe is Chana Dal or Split Chickpeas. Generally, this Chutney Maharashtrian Style is tangy due to curd and the texture of this chutney is due to blended soaked chana dal. Additionally, the chana dal is soaked in water, hence it is light to digest and its texture is superb.

In Maharashtra, curd is added in this soaked chana dal chutney while in South India, fresh coconut is added in this chutney. There are different variations of this chutney in different regions and different recipe of this chutney. In other words, this is an ideal taste enhancer. Not to mention,  it can be served with Indian wholesome meal. Together with,  this chutney recipe is very simple and easy to make.

Wet Masala

  • Coriander Leaves (कोथिंबीर)
  • Curry Leaves (कढीपत्ता)
  • Green Chilies (हिरवी मिरची / हरी मिरची)
  • Curd(दही)

Dry Masala

  • Mustard Seeds (मोहरी)
  • Cumin Seed (जीरे)
  • Chana Dal(चना दाल)
  • Turmeric powder (हळद)
  • Salt (मीठ)
  • Sugar (साखर)
  • Edible oil

How to make chana dal chutney?

step 1

Take one cup chana dal

Wash it with water

step 3

Soaked it in water for 4-5 hours

Drain the water and take it in mixer pot

Add 2-3 green chillies

step 6

Put 3-4 curry leaves

step 7

Add 2 teaspoon chopped coriander leaves

Put one teaspoon cumin seeds

step 9

Blend it to fine course

Take it out in the bowl

Add ½ cup curd into the mixture

Also add 1 teaspoon salt

And add ½ teaspoon sugar

Mix it properly

Take Tadka pan and heat it

Add 1 teaspoon oil and heat it

Put ½ teaspoon mustard seeds

Also add ½ teaspoon cumin seeds

And add ½ teaspoon turmeric powder and stir it

Add 3-4 curry leaves and stir it

Put 1-2 dry red chillies

Stir it and pour this tadka on dal and dahi mixture

Special Note

  • You can increase the quantity of curd if you want more sour chutney
  • Even, we can increase the quantity of green chillies if you want more spicy chutney
  • You can adjust the amount of spiciness based on your choice.

Meanwhile, in South India this chutney is prepared in different ways. Fresh Coconut is added in this chutney in South India. But, I prepared this chutney without coconut.

This soaked chana dal chutney is wet chutney. Its shelf life is 1 day. Even If It's stored in the refrigerator then also its taste is changed.

My experience

In Maharashtra during festive feast, the plate is incomplete without different chutneys. Undoubtedly, this Chutney is one of my all time favorite chutney. I still remember in my home during Ganesh Chaturthi festival, there was a big feast for relatives and friends (it's still there but I cant attain it now). Surprisingly, every year the menu was like Pumpkin spicy sabji, spinach sabji, kadhi, rice, pakora, laddu, papad and this chutney. Undoubtedly, year by year menu changes due to choice and availability but this chutney is inseparable.

In the same way, my husband loves this chutney. So, I always prepared it at home. Most important, it's very simple, easy, delicious and time efficient. on the positive side, no pre-cooking efforts are required. Undoubtedly, I would suggest you try it at home. To repeat, I regularly cooked this this chutney maharashtrian style i.e. chana dal chutney without coconut.
